Sony Service Company Service Bulletin National Technical Services A Division of Sony Electronics Inc. Park Ridge, New Jersey 07656 TV Products CSV-1 Model: KW-34HD1 No. 450 Subject: A-board And B-board Production Changes: Date: January 5, 2000 Old And New Versions Are Not Compatible. Symptom: (****) The design of the A-board and B-board was changed in early December 1999 to add V-Chip capability for analog and digital programs, and Closed Captioning for digital programs. The model number of the set was not changed. All other boards used in the new version of the set are the same as the boards used in the former version of the set. The digital receiver box (set-back box or "SBB") supplied with the new version set has firmware version 2.20 or higher. The version number can be read out from the service mode in category "DTV", adjustment item "AGCL", data "1". It is O.K. to use a new version SBB with a former version set. The only difference is that now the customer will have Closed Captioning for digital programs which was not available with the former version SBB. All SBB's being supplied from the World Repair Parts Center have version 2.20 firmware or higher. The new version A-board is not compatible with the former version B-board. The new version B-board is not compatible with the former version A-board. A pair of new version A-board/B-board can be used in a former set, but this should not be done except when the former version A-board or B-board is not available. A pair of former version A-board/B-board will work in a new version set, but this should never be done because the set will lose its V-Chip capability and digital program Closed Captioning capability. Solution: Order the correct A-board or B-board depending on the version of the set you are repairing. See the next page for methods of determining the version of the set. A note about the B-board: Most former-version B-boards had 10-pin connectors mounted on the edge of the board at positions CN3002 and CN3007, but some former-version B-boards might not have the 10-pin connectors mounted. The new-version B-boards do not have the 10-pin connectors mounted. Accordingly, if a B-board has the 10-pin connectors mounted, it is a former version board. If a B-board does not have the 10-pin connectors mounted, it could be either a former-version board or a new version board. The best way to know for certain is to use one of the methods in the table above when possible. ************************************************************************ . When the OSD CPU IC5208 is replaced with version 1.09 and higher, and the C board is suffix 13, specifications change as follows: 1. When feeding a SECAM signal, chrominance signal (C) remains in luminance signal (Y) at the chroma detector out, causing a residual chrominance signal to appear as noise in the picture. 2. A trap filter that has been added to the Q board, suffix-13, eliminates this noise. Therefore the circuit change was not shown in the Service Manual. This circuit change to IC501 was implemented from the start of production. To prevent the following symptom. If the TV is turned OFF/ON the hold down circuit might not have discharged enough to release the protection circuit. Thereby the LED would continue to blink and no picture present. Solution: A diode D536 was added between the 15-volt line and IC501/pin 8. Also a 47 UF capacitor was added between IC501/pin 4 & 8. The negative side of the capacitor should be connected to IC501/pin 4. Ref. The area where the different brightness levels meet may appear as a faint vertical bar just right of the center of the screen. Solution: Dress all audio/video cables as straight back as possible from the rear of the set where they connect to the input jacks. Avoid dressing the cables along the rear edge of the cabinet between the input jacks and the left side of the cabinet (as viewed from the front). Also, replace the U-board with a new one specifically designed to help reduce the severity of the symptom. The U-board is the small board that contains most of the input jacks; it connects to the A-board.
