(This driver program is only for models PCG-Z505JE and PCG-Z505JS sold in the U.S. and Canada. It is not intended for European or Japanese versions of this model or for other models) Updating the audio driver: 1. From the Sony website, download the YAMZ5J.EXE file to a folder on the hard drive (make a note of the folder name and location) 2. Go to the folder where the file was downloaded and double-click on the YAMZ5J.EXE file. This begins the installation process. 3. At the "DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM) Driver install is complete" screen, verify that "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" is selected, and then click Finish. After the computer has restarted, the installation of the updated audio drivers is complete. Do not delete the YAMZ5J.EXE file. It will be needed if the audio driver needs to be installed again. Verifying: Follow the steps below to verify that the audio driver was successfully installed. 1. From Device Manager, expand the “Sound, video and game controllers" category 2. Double-click the "YAMAHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC (WDM)" component. 3. Solution: Problem may be caused by the hard drive Smart Failure predictor. To confirm: 1. Connect a monitor to the computer and power up the computer. 2. Press the F1 key after the boot process halts. The problem may be a defective hard drive if the unit then boots to the operating system. Shut down the computer and continue with step 3 to further confirm. 3. Restart the computer and press the Esc key when the Sony splash screen appears on the monitor (the VAIO or Sony logo that appears at bootup). A boot device menu will appear; select the hard drive (item 3) as the boot drive. The following message will appear if the hard drive is either defective or will fail shortly: 4. Solution: 1. Set DIP switches S601 to the position shown in the table. The DIP switch positions depend on the computer model, the LCD panel type and manufacturer and the stepping (version) of IC601. Do not use the DIP switch settings shown in the service manual. There are two steppings (versions) of IC601, A1 and A2, and the service manual show the switch positions for A1 only. 2. Upgrade BIOS to R0211U0 (autoflaged in SB # 97). Upgrading BIOS is even more important when replacing motherboard with one having A2 stepping. IC601 stepping can be determined without disassembling the unit to gain access to IC601. Remove the hood assy (item 19 in the service manual) and look for the presence or lack of a white dot above the DIP switch. No dot indicates stepping A1, and a dot indicates stepping A2 To determine the stepping from IC601, look at the third line of IC601:"SL4QZ" indicates A1 stepping and “SL55P" indicates A2 stepping.
