Park Ridge, New Jersey 07656 Computer CSI-116 Model: PCG-731, PCG-735, PCG-808 No. 28 Subject: CD-ROM Drive Change Date: February 18, 1999 Symptom: (1766) The CD-ROM drive designation in Windows 95 changes from “G” drive to “D” drive after the CD-ROM drive is replaced with a new one. Solution: Replace the CD-ROM drive with the same type as the original. These computers were shipped with two types of CD-ROM drives; Toshiba model XM-1702B and later in production with Toshiba model XM-1802B. Replacing one drive type with the other will cause Windows to change the drive designation from “G” to “D”. The two drives are functionally similar in all other respects. The CD-ROM model type is printed on the label on every CD-ROM drive. See diagram. Do not return the CD-ROM drive if you order or receive one type of drive in place of the other. Instead, use the following method to restore the “G” designation: 1. From the Windows desktop, right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties from the menu list. 2. Left Click on the Device Manager tab. The hardware devices will be listed. 3. Double click on the CDROM line. The line Toshiba CD-ROM XM1802 or Toshiba CD-ROM XM180 will appear. 4. Double click on the line listing the Toshiba CD-ROM device. 5. Click on the Settings tab. 6. In the Reserved drive letters section, change the Start drive letters to G; and the End drive letters to G. Click OK; then OK again to exit. 7. Restart Windows.
