Solution: Improved ATRAC decoders and Shock proof Memory Contoller IC's are available. The improved ICs can be identified by the date/lot number information printed on the IC. The information takes the form of a code which uses the year/week/"A"/lot#/"E". A code that is read 407A51Ewould mean the IC was manufactured in 1994, in the 07th week. The "A" has no special meaning. The 51 after the "A" is the lot number. Like the "A", the "E" has no special meaning in this code structure, these letters can be found in all different versions of these IC's. For IC101, the ATRAC Decoder IC type CXD2531/AR/BR, the improved ICs have date/lot codes of "412A83E" and later. For IC110, the Shock proof Memory Controller IC, type CXD2526AR, the improved ICs have date/lot codes of "412A26E" and later. In addition you must remove the small board located between the Digital board and the Mechanism. Remove both the board and its lead wires. If attached, remove the jumper wires from the Display board and restore the PCB patterns that have been cut (See diagram). Failure to restore the patterns will result in faulty clock and date operation. Note that on some sets there are no patterns cut, instead two jumper wires are missing on the Display board (one jumper is located near S321 and the other near R314). Sony Drive, Park Ridge, New Jersey 07656 CSA-13 Model: GEN-CD No. 450R1 Subject: CD Optical Block Assemblies Now Available Date: February 15, 1996 Information: (**) This Bulletin serves as an announcement to the Service Field about the Optical Block Replacement Program. The key advantages to the program are: • Reliability - the Optical Block Assembly are fully aligned and tested. In the case of Hi-Fi models, all the adjustments are already done. • Cost - the cost of the assembly is less than the sum of the parts. • Repair time reduced - replacing the Block Assembly is much quicker than replacing individual parts. It also eliminates replacing a second part if the first part does not repair the problem. For example, replacing the optics for skipping and then finding that the spindle motor was actually the cause. The program’s key points and guidelines are: • The Optical Block Assembly consists of the Optics, Motors (and gears) and Chassis. • The Optical Block Assembly has been tested and meets the same standard as new production assemblies. • If the Optical Assembly is not available, normal repair procedures (replacement of individual parts) should be followed. • • Each Optical Block Assembly is supplied with a form that must be filled out by the technician and returned with the defective Optical Block Assembly. • All defective Optical Block Assemblies must be returned to the National Parts Center in Kansas City. Please use the original packaging to return the Assembly. A list of the Optical Block Assemblies and the models which use them follows. Also included with this Bulletin is the procedure for returning the Block Assemblies to the National Parts Center. CONT. Sony Drive, Park Ridge, New Jersey 07656 CSA-13 Model: MDS-501 No. 451 Subject: RF/Servo Board Procedure when replacing Date: November 10, 1995 Optical Device Symptom: (****) The original optical device KMS-140B, (Ref. #21) P/N 8-583-003-21, has been replaced by the KMS-140C (P/N 8-583-005-11). After replacing the optical device, you may find that the unit will play CD discs but not MO discs. Proper adjustment also may not be possible after replacing the optics. Solution: Perform the following procedure on the conductor side of the RF/SERVO Board: • Cut the pattern at the location shown below. • Remove the resist on the board at the spots indicated, and bridge the two points using a thin wire. • Remove the resist at the indicated spot. • Solder the positive lead of a 10uf 35V Tantalum Capacitor (P/N 1-131-353-00) to the clean trace (see diagram below). Solder the negative lead to either C287 or C254. Verify that the height of the capacitor does not exceed 8mm (0.31 in.).
